Three camps worth pitching a tent or a plan around

A route through the three rest camps we return to every season, chosen for how they sleep, what they feed you, and what walks past the fence at dusk.

Before you book

Kruger is too big to see from one camp.

The park stretches nearly 400 kilometres from north to south, and each rest camp sits in a different pocket of terrain with its own rhythm of sightings. We picked three that, together, cover a river capital, the open cat country in the centre, and a quiet green corner in the south. Below is what each one actually offers, not just the brochure version.

Camp 01

Skukuza Rest Camp

The bustling capital, set above the Sabie River

Skukuza is Kruger's largest camp and it behaves like a small town, complete with a bank, a bakery and its own airport nearby. What earns it a place on this list is the river frontage: half the huts and the main deck look straight down onto the Sabie, where hippos and elephants pass through most evenings. It is busier than the other two, so go for the setting and the facilities, not for solitude.

  • Restaurant and river deck
  • Shop, bank and fuel station
  • Day clinic on site
  • Guided walks and night drives
  • Electric fence, patrolled at night
  • Camping and caravan sites

Book a hut on the river loop, not the garden side. The difference in what you hear at night is worth the extra fee.

Satara Rest Camp

Open basalt plains that pull in the cats

Satara sits on nutrient-rich basalt soil that grows short, sweet grass, which is exactly what draws large herds and, in turn, the lion prides that follow them. This is consistently the most productive area in the park for lion sightings, and leopard and cheetah turn up often enough that most rangers rate it their favourite base for a serious game drive. The camp itself is simple and functional rather than scenic, but nobody comes to Satara for the accommodation.

  • Restaurant and cafeteria
  • Swimming pool
  • Shop and fuel station
  • Sunrise and sunset drives
  • Electric fence, patrolled at night
  • Camping and caravan sites

Drive the S100 gravel road east of camp at first light. It is the single most reliable stretch of road for lion in the entire park.

Lower Sabie Rest Camp

Green banks, wide water, and the busiest waterhole in the south

Lower Sabie is the smallest of the three and the one people tend to fall for. It sits on a bend of the Sabie River with lawns running down to the water, and the restaurant deck is genuinely one of the best places in Kruger to sit with coffee and let the wildlife come to you. Sunset Dam, a short drive from the gate, regularly delivers lion, elephant and crocodile in a single sitting. This is where we send anyone visiting Kruger for the first time.

  • Restaurant with river deck
  • Swimming pool
  • Shop and fuel station
  • Guided walks and drives
  • Electric fence, patrolled at night
  • Camping sites near the river

Book the deck restaurant table for breakfast, not dinner. Morning light on the river is when the animals are moving.

Camps fill up fast in the dry season, especially Lower Sabie. Book your three legs in one sitting and let the animals decide what the days look like.
